Purpose

The Social Justice Team (SJT) encourages members of the UUCS congregation to engage in social service, social justice, and social action efforts consistent with the UU Principles. We strive to take action on crucial social justice issues that impact us locally, nationally and around the world. They are guided by the Social Justice Team Manual  and Social Justice Team Policies for UUCS.

SJT In our Community

Social Justice Team members engage in a variety of community and civic projects focused on social justice issues. Some of our community efforts include implementing our Sanctuary Congregation Resolution passed May 17, 2017 by the congregation,  Mid-Willamette Homeless Initiative Task Force meetings, Capitol Pride Day, voter registration drives, 34 Days of Peace events, and Marion Polk Food Share volunteer projects. Other past activities include participation in a Healthy Climate Lobby Day rally, a successful effort to get the Confederate flag removed from the State Capitol grounds, and the NAACP and community-led parade in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Sub-committees of SJT

  • As a sub-committee of the Social Justice Team, the Sanctuary Team works to implement the Sanctuary Congregation Resolution passed May 17, 2017 by a majority vote of congregation members. Their activities include fundraising, gathering volunteers, connecting with like-minded community groups, and preparing the building to receive a guest.
  • A sub-committee of the Social Justice Team is the Simenfalva Partner Church Team. In 2002 the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem formed a covenant with the UU Church in Simenfalva, (she mun fall va) Transylvania (in Romania) for mutual support, friendship and respect for our cultural and religious customs.
  • Another sub-committee of the Social Justice Team is the Cordon Road Stewardship project. Several times a year we clean up a portion of Cordon Road near the church as part of the Adopt A Road Program.

The team also works with and promotes many of our affiliated ministry organizations in the realm of social justice.

More info about what we’re up to can be found on the Social Justice Team page.

The team holds monthly business meetings where they discuss recent and upcoming activities supported by the team.  They also have a monthly discussion group where attendees bring topics for discussion. Check the UUCS calendar for the latest dates and times or send an email to the team, below.
