The mission of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem (UUCS) is to provide a respectful home for intellectual, spiritual, and creative exploration, and to build a community of fellowship, caring and service that lights the flame of social action. UUCS strives to be at the forefront of working for social and economic justice, both in the United States and around the globe. In May 2017, congregation members voted to take steps to become a sanctuary congregation.

From soup kitchens to sheltering the homeless, supporting petitions to marching in the streets, giving respite to care-takers to microfinance projects in developing countries, advocating for civil rights to greening our sanctuary, you will find the Social Justice Team and many other UUCS members actively involved in social action issues.

Call to Action

The Social Justice Team encourages all UUCS members and friends to actively participate in events and activities that support social justice causes.  In addition to specific events listed on the calendar, the team has suggestions for ways you can add your voice or a helping hand.  Read the latest Calls to Action, in the posts to the right.

Social Justice Calendar

Islamaphobia Vigil SmallIn an effort to keep the congregation more informed about opportunities to get involved in social justice activities within the greater Salem-Keizer area, the Social Justice Team (SJT) has created an online calendar. The events posted on the calendar are not necessarily organized by the SJT, but by other community organizations whose activities align with the 7 principles of Unitarian Universalism. If you utilize Google Calendar or other supported online calendar services you can subscribe to the calendar, allowing events to be added to your own personal calendar. If you know of an event that would be appropriate for this calendar, please notify our team by filling out the Contact Social Justice Team form.
