I have been a member of UUCS for thirty years, having served on the Board for a number of years including, as its Chair. Throughout the years I have also served on a number of committees, currently including the Internship Committee and as the leader of a covenant group. The UUCS has been very important to me. It has provided fellowship and friendships, been a source of spiritual connection, and been a beacon of liberal religion in Salem. This congregation has also provided religious education for my children, and been a major support during important times in my life, such as when Rev. Rick performed the marriage ceremony for my daughter and led the memorial service for my wife.
I agreed to be on the nominating committee because I feel that while many people lend their time and talent to enriching our congregation, new energy and ongoing creative leadership are vital: without them over time we will wither. My aim is that younger members (both in terms of age and at heart) and a combination of newer members, along with longer term members such as myself, can be persuaded to be part of our leadership team. So, should I be affirmed for this committee, don’t be surprised if I ask, cajole, or even gently pester you to step into a leadership role. I think you will find it will be an opportunity to discover hidden talents, occasionally manage frustration, but above all be a rewarding experience.
