Theodore Parker was a Unitarian minister and one of this country’s best-known public speakers in the middle years of the 19th century. He was a theologian of freedom and an activist in the cause of abolishing slavery, though a number of colleagues turned against him for his powerfully rational approach to Bible teachings. What would he have to say about current trends in our national life, when racist assertions swirl together with a storm of attacks on reason and logical thought?
