Forgive Me My Trespasses

We all have made mistakes and have felt the need to apologize. We have also all been hurt by others and sometimes been given an apology, and sometimes not been given one. Yet we are constantly told of the importance of forgiveness for hurts done to us, at least for our own sake, if not for the benefit of others. Is giving and receiving an apology an artform and is it necessary to maintain positive healthy relationships with others as well as a positive relationship with ourselves?
