The UUCS Microfinance Project started in 2008 in response to Rev. Rick Davis’ call for our congregation to do something to address global poverty elsewhere in the world. Since then, our congregation has raised about $3,000 to $5,000 each year and has been highly successful helping poor families in Laos, Peru, Kenya, and now Nicaragua. The basic idea: Make small loans to people living on the edge, so they can increase their earning power, escape poverty and make a better living for their families. Often, poor people are not able to borrow money to buy small equipment items or materials necessary for their businesses. Banks are reluctant to lend to poor individuals. Our donations create permanent revolving loan funds that remain in the community to provide capital now and in the future.

Ron Hockley, Executive Director of the NEO Fund, will reflect on how a major failed attempt in Managua, Nicaragua, ultimately led to a compassionate, sustainable, and successful approach to help the poorest communities. The UUCS Microfinance project will partner with the NEO Fund during the 2016-17 church year. Sales of beautiful African beaded jewelry, Nicaraguan products and tops designed by our own Julia Brown will raise funds for our UUCS Microfinance project to benefit the poor in Nicaragua and Kenya following each service.
