Salem Speaks Up! will be held December 10 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the MICAH Building, 680 State St. NE (next to the First United Methodist Church) in commemoration of the 68th Anniversary of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Event organizers are the United Nations Association, American Association of University Women, and League of Women Voters, with support from numerous other community groups.
The theme this year is Coming Together in Peace and Thanksgiving, followed by an open microphone, when community members are encouraged to SPEAK UP!
Do you have concerns about the way people of color are treated in Salem? Do you have concerns about homelessness in our community? Do you worry that immigrant children are denied equal access to quality education? Do you wonder whether members of the LGBT community feel safe here? Do you have a story to tell? Come talk about local human rights issues – racism, classism, ageism, etc.
Each person who speaks is encouraged to describe experiences and concerns, and suggest possible support systems or changes they would like to see. We make progress when we talk to each other, when we listen to each other. Our voices are stronger when we use them together. Come join the conversation.
